International Organization for Standardization [ISO] released its new ISO 50001 Energy Management Standard last month which was developed with the active participation of the US Dept of Energy. The new standard provides an internationally recognized framework for organizations to voluntarily implement an energy management system.
ISO 50001 promotes the widespread adoption of best practices and drives investment in energy efficiency. U.S. industrial facilities, buildings, and other organizations earning certification under ISO 50001 will signal to national and international customers their responsible stewardship of energy resources. On a national scale, implementation of ISO 50001 will help address national priorities for energy security, carbon reduction, and economic competitiveness. Globally, the standard could influence up to 60% of the world's energy use.
The DOE Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy agency suggests the following steps:
- Secure commitment from top management
- Acquire, track and analyze data
- Determine significant energy uses
- Establish a baseline
- Identify energy opportunities
- Prioritize energy-saving opportunities
I have added the emphasis to the above steps as that has been our focus all along. We plan to actively work with our clients to help them put in place an effective system based on our proven E2DR(R) architecture. We are excited that ISO has placed its seal of approval on this important area and made having a data tracking and reporting system a key part of this work.
