Verizon Touts Home Energy Controls

by psvish 7. January 2011 11:43

At the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show [CES] in Las Vegas, Verizon Wireless announced a home energy management + security application using its 4G broadband network. [For a report on this with nice photos, visit Cnet here. A sample photo is shown below from the Cnet site]. Real-time remote monitoring and control of consumers’ homes and their energy consumption will be possible using select smartphones. Connected home services are a new generation of consumer services that allow users to remotely monitor and control the connected devices in their homes, individually and as a system. The services currently include energy management, home security and monitoring, home health, and media management.

Many companies have been looking to offer such services via utility DSM programs. A number of utilities are piloting in-home displays and energy management modules as part of their Smart Grid efforts and also, in their regular DSM portfolios. To date, these have not achieved significant market penetration. Efforts by wireless phone companies, such as the one by Verizon here, provide an alternative to utility programs. They also may lead to faster consumer acceptance when energy management is made possible via elegantly designed apps for popular phones such as iPhone, Droids, etc.
